Artist Spotlight Michelle Nunnery
Michell Nunnery Teddy

Michelle started making her bears out of other materials since fur was not available where she lived. This was before teddy bear supplies were readily available on the Internet. Michelle began contacting people in bear making magazines to inquire on purchasing mohair fur. Most artists told her to try and sample with plush before moving to the high cost of mohair. As a result of this advice, she worked with Sherpa for about a year. She was actually able to make some pretty cute bears and sell them in country shops. Michelle did not purchase her first mohair until much later in her bear making career.

She made around 500 plush bears that all went to family, friends and country shops. She sold them for very little, since she actually loved to make them and didn't care much for the money. Still, she yearned to own my very own mohair bear.

Michelle Nunnery Teddy

Michelle Nunnery has always been very fond of teddies. Her Opa (Grandfather) in Germany gave Michelle her first teddy when she was very little. The teddy was made of alpaca and she still owns him today. At an early age she adored mohair teddy bears. She would go to shops and browse for hours admiring them. She even went out of her way to visit the teddy bear museum in South Florida several times, just to see all the exquisite teddies and the many different artists styles. In spite of all her admiring, she was never able to purchase any mohair teddies due to their expensive cost. One day in 1992, she decided to grab one of her daughter's stuffed bears (an inexpensive one that she would never miss) and pull it apart to learn how to make one!

Michell Nunnery Teddy

Michelle's family began to grow and so did their living expenses, so she hung up bear making for a few years. Deep in her heart she still dreamed of owning a mohair bear, but knew it would be a very long time before that could happen. In 2005 Michelle's youngest daughter was born. She was off work 14 weeks on maternity leave with plenty of spare time on her hands. She had just got wireless internet and discovered ebay. She had no idea there were hundreds of bear makers selling on ebay until she accidentally stumbled upon one of Denise Purringtons's adorable darling bears. She was amazed by the beauty she saw in that bear and was amazed at how bears had changed over the last few years. She went on to discover all the many other wonderful and adorable handmade bears there were.

Michell Nunnery Teddy

This sparked Michelle's inner bear making calling once again. So, she broke out all of her supplies and started it all over again. Of course, she had to start with plush. She put a few bears on ebay and started slowly...

Once she was able to get enough money saved up, she finally ordered mohair. Michelle says she will never forget the feeling when she received her first piece of mohair. She actually did not cut into it for weeks, afraid of messing it up. It sat forever in front of her until she finally got the nerve up to make her first mohair bear - she named her "Rosey". Michelle made this first mohair bear by candle light - hand sewn during a hurricane in Panama City, Florida.

Michell Nunnery Teddy

After the sale of a few mohair bears, she was finally able to buy her first mohair bear. Michelle says it was like Christmas for her, so she understands how collectors feel when they get their bears in the mail!

Today Michelle works with all sorts of materials from plush, vintage mink, vintage fox, and mohair. She says she has to admit: "Although she loves mohair and it's value, she really like to work with plush material, and thank goodness there is some very good quality plush today". Michelle says: "She has some awesome customers that have been with her since she restarted in 2005, and she'd like to thank them for being loyal to her and still collecting from her today." She says it's because of them and all their compliments that keep her going and stretching to come up with new designs. She says her customers also inspire her with ideas and constructive criticism that she accepts graciously.

The Teddy Patch Announces
March Featured Artist
Karin Jehle

Karin Jehle, Loveable Fellows

Our featured artist this month is Karin Jehle of Loveable Fellows.  Karen lives in Stuttgart, Germany with her husband, two cats, and her teddy bears.  Karin began creating her Lovable Fellows bears fifteen years ago and is still an active artist and collector.  Karin tells us that teddy bears have always had a special place in her life.  As a child, she had an old Herman bear which was a gift from her Mother - which she still keeps by her bedside.  She feels she keeps that part of her childhood with her teddy bears.  "They are the best remedy against stress and trouble and they give comfort as they are good listeners and faithful companions," says Karin.

Karin has won numerous awards and has been featured in many International magazines.  Her awards include 2008 URSA Awards Competion, Ted Worldwide Awards 2008 and 2005/2006, Tokoyo International Teddy Awards 2007, and 2004 Golden Teddy Award Nominee - just to name a few!

Karin's bears range from 1.5 to 27-inches in size.  She loves trying new designs and ideas, and loves experimenting with new materials, patterns and techniques such as needle sculpting, needle felting, eye lids, airbrushing and jointing.  She loves to create a large variety of styles and most of her bears are one-of-a-kind.  Her talent and creativity is evident in the wonderful variety of bears she produces. Karin spends hours creating her bear's faces and wants every bear to have its own personality and "just be a true fellow."
Karin's passion began in 1994

Karin says she passed a shop on her way to work and saw several teddy bears looking at her from the window.  "It was love at first sight," Karin recalls.  She attended bear making courses offered at this shop and was fascinated by her first bear and immediately infected by the so-called "bear virus" from that very moment.  She soon began designing her own bears and called them "Lovable Fellows."  Her beautiful and expressive creations have found homes all over the world.

They have to convey that they really live ...

Karin relates an beautiful experience she had when a widow who had adopted some of her bears, wrote to her to say that Karin's bears gave her so much comfort and she no longer felt alone.  Karin finds it very important that every bear has its own personality and is a real pal.  "they have to convey that they really live," she said, ensuring many generations to come will treasure, love and pass down her creations as well.  Karin tells us she could not imagine life without her bears.

Our featured artist this month is Barbara Choo of Merry-Go-Bears. Barbara lives in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Barbara and her Mother, Sharon, are business partners and are relatively new to the bear making world. Barbara and Sharon started out as passionate collectors and share each other's creative dream.

Although they are new to the business, their newly found talent is evident in their wonderful little creations. Sharon contributes her design ideas as well as helps Barbara with her bears. This talented Mother and daughter team is basically self-taught and, since bear making is relatively new in Malaysia, they are on the leading edge of the business. Their enthusiasm will most certainly guide the future of bear making in Asia.

Merry-Go-Bears are one-of-a-kind, unique little individuals, created from original designs and handmade with great care and details using traditional methods. Most of them are made from mohair, alpaca, or selected quality faux fur and are 5-way fully jointed with embroidered waxed noses. Each is firmly stuffed with poly fill and weighted on their tummies with poly pellets. They are also carefully accented with hand painted details to bring out the different personality and character in each and everyone of them.

In addition to her own creations, Barbara offers workshops and bear making kits to those interested in bear making in her area. She also offers them on her website and at auction.

We asked Barbara if she felt her business was affected by the economonic down-turn and if she had scaled back on her efforts in any way. She was very positive about her business and still makes a bear every three days! She told us she was looking at getting more exposure for her bears in addition to marketing on the internet. She now has set up a little shop to have them sold locally plus she markets them to all her friends. She has also adjusted her pricing to keep her bears within reach of her collectors' budgets and she is determined to continue improving her skills.

 Quick Links...

The teddy bear artist that had made it assured her that anyone could do it so she decided to give it a try. She was amazed at how well her first teddy turned out and so were her family and friends! From then on, there was no stopping. Peggy says it has become an obsession and also a lot of fun.

Peggy makes teddy bears out of mohair, synthetic fur and recycled fur coats. She has just recently started experimenting with needle felting and plans to incorporate her newest skill into some of her bears. Artist Spotlight Sue Pendleton - Bluebeary Treasures
Sue Pendleton

So, how does a retired civil servant end up designing doll and teddy bear patterns?

Sue says her mother taught her the basics of thread crochet when she was about 10 years old or so. She made basket after basket, because she didn't know how to read patterns, or make the crochet into a flat circle! Years later, Sue taught herself to read directions, and became a "crochet fanatic," staying up until all hours of the night to finish doilies, sweaters, and blouses.

Sakura - Pendleton

Sue creates the cutest little crocheted bears and other critters including miniature Raggedy Ann dolls and Japanese-style (Anime) bears. She also offers crochet patterns for miniature bears, rabbits, cats, raggedy dolls, primitive character dolls, Santa Clause, Japanese anime bears, bear outfits, jar doilies, and coasters.

Sue says she loves to create with her hands -- crochet, knitting, painting, decoupage, sewing, drawing, doll making -- if involves creating, she says she would probably love to try it!

Reginald Braunbruin

Sue's design, Reginald Braunbruin III, (pictured here) was nominated for a 2006 Golden Teddy Award. Serendipity, her little faery bear, received 4th place in the Zoom category of the 2006 Ursa Awards. Sue's bears have appeared in Teddy Bear Review, and in Teddy Bears and Friends magazines.

Baby Bear Retro

One of Sue's newest creations is this cute little Retro Bobby Bear who looks like he came right out of the 1950's. Bobby is 4.5" tall, including his sailor hat. He is hand-sewn made from hand-dyed wool felt, with onyx eyes and his features are embroidered with hand-dyed cotton floss. His head is jointed and his limbs are thread-jointed. His face and ears are subtly shaded and he has red cheeks from playing outdoors! Bobby's cute little outfit was crocheted from hand-dyed Valdani cotton thread. His clothes are removable.

Sue and her husband John live in the beautiful Texas hill country with our their miniature schnauzers, Max and Beau.

Sue has an Artist Studio Store at The Teddy Patch where you can view some of her wonderful items for sale. Use the Quicklink at the left to visit! To see all Sue's work, use the Quicklink to visit her website.

Artist Spotlight Penney Ahmed Seamore Collectibles
Penny Ahmed

Penney describes herself as a bear inspired Artist. She is originally from the UK and moved here to Colchester, CT in New England approximately 20 years ago with her husband. Approximately six years ago, just by chance, she went into Joann's craft store and picked up a Teddy Bear Magazine. Her Husband challenged her into making one and it just escalated from there. Little did he know he had created a Teddy Bear "monster!"

Penney believes she has made a wide move into creating one-of-a-kind bear bears, she originally started off at craft fairs. But not with bears. She used her artistry to design and paint in enamel on glassware, not a Donna Dewberry style but her own designs always involved bright beautiful colors such as flowers. Penney says painting on glassware isn't easy but it's an extremely long process from designing, painting, curing and glossing. She progressed from vases, to glasses to special gifts and special orders for glass ornaments, which were a great hit at Christmas time.

Penney slowly introduced herself to local craft stores and immediately began to sell her artwork. She was very encouraged to continue her journey of exploring new avenues. So the next obvious choice was to try with the bears. Her bears were originally given as personal gifts and she slowly introduced them into the fairs and faded out the glassware. She misses the painting but there are many times over the last year that she has picked up her paintbrush and incorporated into her bear designs. A new idea brought to light was to design her own ACEO cards, which she now likes to draw and paint. So now each bear comes with his/her own card when they arrive at their new home.

Lex the Lion

Penney prefers to utilize vintage plush and soft cashmere but she does venture into mohair occasionally. She has been blessed with features here in the US and UK magazines. Because she tends to specialize in one-of-a kind bears, she prefers not to use the same pattern as she gets easily bored. (And that's another project just in it self to organize the patterns). She believes in pushing her creativity to the fullest. She creates the bears and patterns in her head and applies it as she goes along. Her latest project was to stretch her comfort zone into making a realistic polar bear. His name is Yumee, which means Peace. Two heads and three noses later she is thrilled at how he came out. She believes that stretching herself creatively even further she will create a duo of polar bears for adoption.

She admits she has no formal training, but was fortunate that her mother taught her how to sew on her old singer sewing machine. It was a real beauty, So for her larger bears she will use the sewing machine but prefers hand sewing for the special details especially applied to miniatures. Penney in turn love to read and explore new techniques from many of the forums on the Internet. Magazines have been a great blessing as they contain informative info on Bear Events, Bear Artists and upcoming Teddy bear competitions.

Her newest creations have been Lions and purely by chance she discovered that the little creatures could be just as challenging to make as bears. She enjoys the intricate details you have to apply to make a small bear look perfect. Particularly the faces, which she pays close attention to. Also working with invisible thread and a naked eye keeps her less stressed than her full time position.

She created a new website last year and has been taking special orders for her bears. One very sweet lady had her design 12 different ladybug miniature bears for her collection. Penney says it was thrilling to create special bears that would all be friends together. At this present time she prefers to sell on Bearpile and The Teddy Patch. She finds the process a lot easier and she says she gets nervous when it's an auction site such as Ebay. Having to wait to see if her poor little bear it going to be adopted by a new bear friend. The monthly dues are easier on her pocket and less strain on her brain to concentrate on her creativity. She only now attends one bear show a year, in Amherst, MA. Which makes for a very long day...So she is leaning towards the Internet. This way her husband can help with the emails and delivery to the post office. Penney's daughter officially names the bears and gives them bear hugs before they are packed up and sent on their way, well fed and loved to their new friends.

Her very first bear was called "half bear", and she's so amusingly funny because she has one of her legs sown on backwards. Now that Penney can reflect back on some of her mistakes she can realize how much she have grown as an Artist. She has met some wonderful bear friends and bear artists along the way. Who knows what she has conjuring up in her? Only time will tell, as long as Penney feels they are heartfelt and appreciated and bring smiles to your faces. Her mission is accomplished and will help brighten up your day.

Horace Wimp

Our featured artist this month is the talented British artist, Charlotte Deadman. Charlotte creates beautifully detailed, tiny bears ranging in size from 2-1/2 to 3-3/4 inches. Charlotte also makes all her bears' clothing and accessories using only the finest swiss cotton fabrics and pure wool yarns.

Charlotte's impressive "The Diary of Horace Wimp" pictured here was inspired by the Electric Light Orchestra's classic tune. Horace is 3-3/4 inches tall, fully jointed, and made from mohair with worn leather paws and pads. He has onyx bead eyes, embroidered nose, mouth and claws. Horace wears a miniature hand-knit wool jacket with leather toggle buttons and an inset pocket. His diary is leather, edged with buttonhole stitching and monogrammed with his initials. Artist Spotlight - Aina Ferris
Aina Ferris

Aina lives on a farm west of Ottawa Ontario, Canada with her husband and three cats. She has been an artist since childhood and has dabbled in painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, knitting, crocheting, quilting, sewing, cross stitch, needlepoint and, of course, teddy bears. She graduated from the University of Guelph with a degree in Fine art and English, hoping for a career in commercial art. Fate intervened and she became a Human Resources professional instead. Aina is working hard to turn her passion for bear making into a new career once she retires from her government job.

Our featured artist this month is the talented Canadian artist, Aina Ferris.

Captain_ainaferris

Aina started making bears about five years ago and started to attend bear shows in the fall of 2003. She creates her bears under the name of Binkibears which she named after one of her favorite bears. Aina's designs are originals and she loves to use a variety of styles, colors, medium and sizes. She started making the traditional style mohair bears, moved into character mohair bears and then character crochet bears. She also creates other animals as well as bears, especially elephants. Her creations range in size from 2 to 18 inches. Aina writes stories for all her bears so they can be adopted and know that their names and characters will be appreciated by their new owners.

PBGang_ainaferris

Aina recently added a new bear family to her line. These little fellows are called pocket buddy bears (PB Bears). They are inspired by the Japanese style bears and have large heads and small bodies and are small enough for a pocket or purse so no one needs to leave home without one.

bettiblue aina ferris

She has also created a family of crocheted bears called Funcky Bears named after her great grandfather, the Baron von Funck. These bears are fun and off the cuff and live up to their names.

Aina has won several awards including the ACE award in 2003 and in 2005. More recently she received an URSA award for two of her creations, a mohair backpack bear and a tiny crocheted tabby kitten.
